Berea, Ohio is a picturesque city located 12 miles south of Cleveland. Founded in 1836, the historic city is known throughout the world for its exceptional sandstone. Like most small-college towns, Berea boasts numerous shopping and dining options. Bucci’s Restaurant is one of Berea’s most popular restaurants. Located in downtown Berea, the restaurant serves up mouth-watering Italian classics like gnocchi, spaghetti, lasagna, and Chicken Marsala. The newly opened Union Depot Taverne is located in the historic Berea Union Station. A modern, upscale restaurant, the tavern features two bars, three dining areas, 14 beers on tap, 23 craft brews, and 50 wine labels. Dishes include appetizers, gourmet burgers, fish tacos, horse-radish crusted salmon, Certified Angus steaks, and scallops over pasta.
Additional restaurants in Berea include Andrew’s Market, Café Ah Roma, Scoundrels, Tony K’s Bar and Grill, Treehugger’s Café, Corned Beef Factory, Maya MEX Restaurant, and Zach’s Place. Berea real estate also is home to five major shopping centers: The Berea Commons and Downtown Triangle, Parkside Shoppes, West Valley Plaza, Berea Plaza, and the North End. Stores include Giant Eagle, Marc’s, CVS, Walgreens, Dollar Tree, Karen’s Hallmark, and Pick Wick Food Mart.
Berea Parks and Recreation
Berea boasts a number of beautiful outdoor spaces, including two lakes and several neighborhood parks. Once a sandstone quarry, Coe Lake is now an idyllic place to fish, canoe, and kayak. The surrounding area features a boardwalk with pier, a bird and butterfly habitat, a gazebo for summer concerts, and an outdoor swimming pool. Wallace Lake is known as one of the best places around for winter-time ice fishing. The Lou and Jackie Groza Sports Complex features three baseball diamonds, a basketball court, fitness stations, picnic areas, a concession stand, and a newly remodeled children’s playground. Additional playgrounds include John Mucklo Playground, R.B. Scott Playground, and the playground at Dora Lee Payne Park. Dora Lee Payne Park is also home to soccer fields, a baseball diamond, and a basketball court. Berea real estate also includes miles of nature trails.
Furthermore, the Berea Recreation Center features an indoor pool, free weight and cardio rooms, a basketball court, a running track, locker rooms, and a sauna. Group exercise programs and sports leagues also are offered. Berea also hosts the annual Cuyahoga County Fair, the Grindstone Festival, and a variety of other seasonal and annual events, including the Berea Summer Theater, the Cleveland Metroparks’ Fishing Derby, and the Light Up Berea Holiday Parade.
The city offers a wide variety of housing options from historic homes on large, maple-shaded lots to cute bungalows and townhouses. New, custom-designed houses also are available. Many of Berea’s houses are situated on pretty plots along tree-lined streets. Especially relevant, most are within walking distance to area shops and restaurants. Approximately 19,093 people live in the city. Median home cost in 2012 was $106,600.
Berea Schools, Health, and Transportation
The Berea City School District operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, and a vocational school within the city limits. St. Mary’s and St. Adelbert’s parochial schools serve children through eighth grade. Adult students can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees at Baldwin Wallace College, located in the middle of the city.Southwest General Health Center offers award-winning acute health care services to Cleveland-area residents. Residents of Berea travel easily around town and into downtown Cleveland on the RTA. The Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport is only two miles away. Amtrak stations are located in nearby Cleveland, Elyria, and Akron.
